Deputy Prime Minister in charge of European Affairs, Bujar Osmani, during a several-day working visit to Washington, visited the USAID headquarters in Washington, where he had a meeting with Margot Ellis, Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator in the Bureau for Europe and Eurasia. In the same regard, Osmani visited the headquarters of the largest American international institutes, where he had meetings with Paul McCarthy, Regional Director for Europe at the International Republican Institute IRI, and with Sherry Brian, Vice President of the National Democratic Institute NDI.
"As National Coordinator of Foreign Assistance, I would like to express my personal satisfaction, and of course to convey the messages of gratitude on behalf of the entire Government for the successful targeting of US development assistance in the country, laying the foundations for democratic and civic development of the country," said Osmani at the meeting, referring to the direct US support for the Republic of Macedonia of over half a billion dollars since the independence.
"Our goal is to build a functional multi ethnic democracy that will be based on the principles of civil society, rule of law, equality, freedom of solidarity, and all other principles that are part of the values of Western civilization," Osmani stated, pointing out the role of USAID, as the main centre for the distribution of development assistance, but also the role of the international institutes IRI and NDI, whose presence has left an indelible mark on the democratic, political, civic and social development of the country. Osmani reaffirmed Government's commitment to continuity within the framework of cooperation with US institutions, if it is a key segment in completing the transformation of the country in accordance with Western rules, standards and values.
Earlier, Osmani took part at a round table where in front of the representatives of one of the most influential think tank organisations in the United States, whose topic was the cooperation between the United States and Europe - the German Marshal Fund, had an address on: Next Steps: Macedonia on the Road to Democratic Reform, NATO and EU Membership).
