Deputy Prime Minister in charge of European Affairs,
Bujar Osmani, during the several-day working visit to Washington, had a meeting
with William Berkley, Director of NATO and European Affairs at the National
Security Council of the White House Administration.
"Probably there is no better timing for this
meeting, given the formal signing of the NATO protocol, after which Macedonia
officially sits on the chair at the Euro-Atlantic alliance," Osmani said
at the meeting, pointing out this success as a common interest to all NATO countries,
for which he especially expressed gratitude for the support of the United
States in this process.
"Macedonia remains a reliable partner of the
United States in the region, strongly committed to the promotion of Western
values, democracy and stability in the region," Osmani said, conveying the
message from the Government for its commitment to the reform process, the
building of stable and sound institutions, as well as good neighbourly
relations. Osmani pointed out the activities in the reform Plan 18 as a basis
for progress in the EU integration process, pointing to our expectations for
another positive report and recommendation by the European Commission, as a
basis on which we expect the start of negotiations with the EU this year.
At today's Agenda, Osmani has visits to the largest
American international institutes, where he will have meetings with Paul
McCarthy, Regional Director for Europe at the International Republican
Institute IRI, as well as with Sherry Brian, Vice President of the Democratic
National Institute NDI. Earlier, Osmani also took part in a round table where
representatives of one of the most influential think tank organisations in the
USA, whose topic was the cooperation between the United States and Europe - the
German Marshal Fund, he had an address on the topic: Next Steps: Macedonia on
the Road to Democratic Reform, NATO and EU Membership).
