Today in Brussels, the explanatory screening meeting for Chapter 24, "Justice, Freedom and Security" continues, at which the Deputy Prime Minister and chief negotiator with the Union, Maricik, said that the Macedonian negotiating team from this area builds on the previous experience gained and continues with the new regulations, from 2019 until today, emphasizing that this is a great advantage for us that we should use and validate it.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister Maricik, Chapter 24 is the "heart of the negotiations", along with Chapter 23 as part of the "Foundations" Cluster according to the new methodology, for which he expressed confidence that the vision of where we are today and where we should be by 2030 will be reflected in the requested Roadmap for the rule of law.
In his presentation, Maricik highlighted what North Macedonia has done in the fight against terrorism, noting that the Law on Prevention of Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism has been adopted - in order to comply with the 5th Directive on AML to prevent the use of the financial system for the purposes of money laundering or terrorist financing (2018 /843) and the revised recommendations of the Financial Action Working Group. The joint action plan for the fight against terrorism for the Western Balkans between the European Commission and the authorities of the Republic of North Macedonia, as a framework for joint action in the fight against terrorism, is continuously implemented.
Maricik added that the Government adopted the National Risk Assessment in March 2020 regarding money laundering and financing terrorism and mentioned the adopted National Plan for reintegration, re- socialisation and rehabilitation of returning fighters and their family members with the participation of several state institutions and social stakeholders in order to implement the established priorities in the prevention of violent extremism and radicalism.
Today ends the second day of the presentations by the European Commission on EU legislation and standards in the area of justice, freedom and security for the Macedonian and Albanian negotiating teams in this area. From Monday, explanatory screening meetings for Chapter 23 – Judiciary and Fundamental Rights begin.
