The coordination of Italian development programmes and initiatives is under responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (www.esteri.it), and institutions authorised for their management are the following:
Steering Committee For Development Cooperation is the major management and decision-making institution of the Italian Development Cooperation;
Directorate - General For Development Cooperation (DGCS) within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), is responsible for bilateral and multilateral development cooperation activities;
Directorate - General for European Countries (DGEU) within the MFA, is responsible for the cooperation programmes in the Western Balkans, funded under a special law (No 84/2001);
Central Technical Unit (UTC) supports DGSC activities with technical advice in Project Cycle Management;
Local Cooperation Offices, established within Italian Embassies in developing countries, are composed of UTC experts and local consultants.
Italy in the Republic of Macedonia
Italian Government has provided support to the Republic of Macedonia (http://www.italian-embassy.org.ae/ambasciata_skopje) in the sectors of great importance for the economic and social development such as health, water supply and environment protection infrastructures; SMEs, as well as emergency humanitarian support during the Kosovo crisis. For that purpose, it has allocated approximately EUR 25 million in the period 1999 to 2001. In addition, Italy has provided support to the Macedonian Public Broadcasting and to the Ombudsman’s Office.
For each agreed programme, the Governments of Italy and Macedonia sign separate bilateral agreement.
