OSMANI: THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE LAW ON LANGUAGES- HIGH PRIORITY OF THE COUNTRY
12:15, Thursday, May 23, 2019

Today, in the premises of the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia, the first coordinative donor meeting organised by the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of European Affairs, Bujar Osmani, in the role of the National Coordinator for Foreign Assistance and the Director of the Agency for the Implementation of the Law on the Use of Languages  Ilber Sela.

"The implementation of the new Law on the Use of Languages is a priority of the country for further promotion of democracy and respect for fundamental rights, while at the same time the Law itself significantly enhances and expands the use of the Albanian language, thus solving one of the last open issues that created inter-ethnic tensions after the constitutional changes of 2001", stated Deputy Prime Minister Osmani. "If we want to properly implement the law, we have to face the challenges for its full implementation," Osmani added.

The meeting was attended by a large number of representatives of the Donor Community in the country, representatives of the embassies, financial institutions, OSCE, etc. At the meeting, the Government's Plan for Implementation of the Law on the Use of Languages was presented in order to determine the possibilities to provide support for its implementation with donor assistance, as well as possible exchange of experiences and transfer of knowledge from countries that have embedded functional bilingual systems.

The Law on the Use of Languages was enacted as early as March 2018, after which the Agency for Supervision and Coordination of the Implementation of the Law on the Use of Languages was established in January this year, which director is the university professor Dr. Ilber Sela, and in February this year an inter-ministerial working group for the implementation of the Law was established.
